The International Atomic Energy Agency said on October 2, local time, that due to continued low diesel fuel reserves, the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is considering further reducing the number of emergency diesel generators on automatic standby. Emergency diesel generators mainly provide electricity for critical safety systems in nuclear power plants when external power supply is interrupted. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, from August to September of this year, the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant depended on emergency diesel generators for nearly three weeks due to a long period of loss of external power, which led to a marked decline in diesel reserves. Due to military activities in the surrounding area, recent efforts to refill diesel are still being hampered. At the same time, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant's external power supply is also weak. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant has lost its external power supply 10 times since June this year. Currently, it only relies on a 330 kV external transmission line, so the reliability of backup power is particularly important. International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Grossi said that the continued lack of diesel supplies is exacerbating the already fragile nuclear safety situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, and called on relevant parties to ensure that fuel arrives at the nuclear power plant as soon as possible.
