What XPO Holders Saw Early, And Where That Question Is Live Now

Simply Wall St·10/03/2026 08:16:13
Listen to the news

If you only read the 2025 reports on XPO’s freight exposure, regulatory risk, and rising labor costs, a smooth ride was hardly guaranteed. Holding XPO over the past year would have returned 44.8%, including dividends. That gain arrived while automation threats, decarbonization rules, and execution risk in AI-heavy projects were clearly flagged in advance. If you had been weighing those documents on 2 October 2025, what exactly were you being paid to believe about this business?

The useful thing about a Narrative is that the reasoning is checkable: the assumptions sit beside the argument, and together they imply an estimated Fair Value you can disagree with.

The easy part of this move is behind XPO. Zero in on 31 high quality undervalued stocks for companies trading below our estimates.

The Two XPO Stories Investors Had To Weigh

XPO shares cost US$127 at the start of the period. Anyone buying at that level had to choose between two grounded but very different stories about where the freight carrier might be heading.

The bullish narrative put Fair Value at US$139, based on assumptions such as 4.7% annual revenue growth and profit margins reaching 7.2%, supported by AI optimisation, a younger fleet, and expansion into premium services and SME customers.

The bearish view pointed to a Fair Value of US$84, arguing that automation by rivals, decarbonisation rules, and higher wages could compress margins even if earnings still grew.

What The Results Changed For The XPO Story

XPO then reported Q2 2026 figures that leaned toward the upbeat case. Revenue reached US$2.36b versus US$2.08b a year earlier, while net income rose from US$106m to US$162m. Net margin moved from 5.1% to 6.9%, which pointed in the direction of the higher margin path the bullish narrative relied on, even as regulatory and automation risks remained untested.

The lesson is simple. When a thesis hinges on margin expansion, do not just track sales. Watch net income and the percentage margin line together over several reports to see whether efficiency claims are actually landing in the income statement.

What XPO's Price Already Assumes After The Run

XPO trades at US$186 after a 44.8% gain over the past year, while the selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below that level. The current view is that recent execution is strong, but the valuation already bakes in robust freight volume, solid pricing, and persistent productivity gains.

Anyone buying today is effectively assuming that LTL margins, free cash flow, and capital returns can keep advancing. The selected Narrative asks how that belief holds up if wage inflation, underused assets, and higher capital spending start to eat into those outcomes.

"Although XPO is currently achieving AI driven productivity gains that are ahead of its own long term assumptions, rising mid single digit wage and benefit inflation and tighter driver availability could outpace future efficiency improvements and eventually push salary, wages and benefits as a share of revenue higher, limiting further operating ratio improvement and net margin expansion. While XPO has invested heavily in trailers, tractors and excess door capacity to benefit from a potential LTL upcycle, a weaker than expected freight demand recovery would leave this larger fixed asset base underutilized, increasing depreciation and overhead per shipment and weighing on future earnings and free cash flow."
