If you only skimmed SK Telecom’s headlines about cyber fallout, subscriber losses, and heavy spending on AI data centers, this outcome might feel counterintuitive. For SK Telecom shareholders, the return from the start of the year was 68.6%, including dividends. If you had bought on 1 January, facing dueling analyst views and a fresh security shock, what exactly were you leaning on, and which risks looked most important at the time?

The shares cost ₩53,100 at the start, and SK Telecom sat between two very different but plausible stories about where value might land.
The bullish narrative pointed to a Fair Value around ₩61,146, a price that only made sense if revenue grew about 1.1% a year and profit margins reached 7.3%, supported by AI data center expansion and new B2B services.
The bearish view leaned on a Fair Value near ₩42,000 and focused on ongoing subscriber losses, higher security spending of ₩700b, and pressure on free cash flow from heavy AI and network investment.
The clearest fresh fact was SK Telecom’s Q2 2026 result. Revenue reached ₩4,359,057m, only slightly above Q2 2025, while net income excluding extra items climbed from ₩84,688m to ₩465,673m and net margin moved from 2.0% to 10.7%. That size of profitability shift gave more weight to the optimistic margin story rather than to the cautious free cash flow worries.
The lesson to carry to other telecom stocks is simple. When the pitch hangs on margin repair rather than fast revenue expansion, the figure to stress test is net margin in the income statement, not just headline sales growth or P/E talk.
SK Telecom now trades at ₩88,400, and the selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below that level. The author’s concern is less about recent profit figures and more about whether heavy AI and cloud spending can keep earning power ahead of subscriber and cash flow strain.
A buyer today is effectively betting that AI and data center growth can more than offset pressure on legacy telecom earnings, so the key question is how the Narrative’s execution risk around that pivot plays into your conviction.
"SK Telecom's escalating capital expenditures, across both new information protection systems and ambitious AI data center projects, poses a structural risk to free cash flow and return on invested capital, because ongoing spending for network upgrades alongside next-generation infrastructure could outpace incremental growth, particularly if diversification efforts in AI and cloud prove slow or insufficient, thereby weighing down long-term profitability."
