If you had backed 8x8 purely on the debate between cloud and AI opportunity on one side and Microsoft and Cisco pressure on the other, the outcome might feel surprisingly balanced. Holding 8x8 from the start of the year would have returned 20.6%, including dividends. If that decision sat in your portfolio today, would you credit the move in Q1 2027 revenue and the narrower loss, or still worry that pricing and compliance headwinds matter more?
On Simply Wall St, a Narrative is an investor's thesis written down: the reasoning, plus the numbers it rests on. Run those numbers and you get an estimated Fair Value.
The easy part of this move is behind 8x8. Zero in on 31 high quality undervalued stocks for companies trading below our estimates.
The shares cost US$1.97 at the start, and anyone looking at 8x8 then had to pick between two very different stories about where the business might head next.
On the bullish side, the Narrative put Fair Value at US$2.31, built on the idea that cloud native, AI powered communication tools and usage based CPaaS, UCaaS and CCaaS would support sustainable revenue growth and margin improvement.
The bearish view set Fair Value at US$1.5 and leaned on a different concern, that pressure from Microsoft and Cisco plus rising compliance spend would keep growth falling 0.2% a year and cap any future P/E at 3.5x.
The clearest new fact was 8x8’s Q1 2027 numbers. Revenue was US$190.17m versus US$181.361m a year earlier, and the loss narrowed from US$4.315m to US$1.2m as net margin shifted from 2.4% negative to 0.6% negative. That helped the optimistic case on margins, but profit remained in the red, so the profitability promise stayed unproven. The evidence cut both ways.
The main assumption on trial was that margin improvement would follow any top line progress. When you look at another communication software stock, track revenue, absolute profit and net margin together across several reports to see whether that pattern is really taking hold.
8x8 now trades at US$2.28, up 21% from the start of the year. The selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below that level, so its author sees the current quote as baking in more optimism than the model supports.
That view leans on worries about competition, pricing pressure and rising compliance and marketing costs. For today’s price to hold up, a buyer would need confidence that 8x8 can keep funding AI and product differentiation, while those expenses do not overwhelm progress on profitability.
"Intensifying competition and lack of product differentiation threaten market share, pricing power, and customer retention, keeping growth below peers. Rising compliance and marketing costs are squeezing margins and delaying the path to sustained profitability."
