The Reddit (RDDT) Case Hinged On More Than Fast Growth

Simply Wall St·10/04/2026 21:22:07
Listen to the news

If you backed Reddit a year ago, the share price performance has been rough. Investors who held Reddit over the past year are down 28.6%, including dividends. If you made that call on 2 October 2025, you were weighing bullish forecasts built on international rollouts, user-generated content, fast revenue growth and very high assumed P/E multiples. Which of those starting assumptions failed to anticipate what actually happened inside the business rather than just on the screen?

Narratives are how investors here put a case on the record, with explicit assumptions about revenue, margins and the multiple. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

This theme extends beyond Reddit. See which of 38 AI small caps may still merit a closer look.

The Two Reddit Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost US$201 at the start, and you were essentially choosing between two very different stories about where Reddit could go next.

The bullish narrative put fair value at US$219, which was 9% above the start price. It leaned on assumptions such as 33.6% revenue growth, a 28.4% profit margin and a future P/E of 55.1x, supported by international rollouts and data licensing potential.

The bearish view set fair value at US$129, or 36% below the start price. That camp still assumed 24.6% revenue growth and a 21.5% profit margin but focused on regulatory pressure and higher compliance costs as key risks to Reddit.

What The Results Changed For The Reddit Thesis

Reddit’s Q2 2026 report showed revenue of US$804.9 million and net income of US$252.8 million, with net margin at 31.4% compared with 17.9% a year earlier. That profitability and scale leaned toward the bullish storyline on revenue growth and margin potential, while search traffic volatility and competition from Meta’s Forum kept the regulatory and platform risk concerns from the cautious case alive. Overall, the evidence cut both ways.

The useful lesson is simple. When a story leans on margin expansion, track the reported net margin and how it moves relative to earlier assumptions, rather than anchoring on headline revenue alone.

What Reddit’s Drop Leaves You Paying For Today

Reddit now trades at US$148, with this Narrative’s Fair Value sitting above that level based on its own math. The argument focuses on a fast-growing business with high incremental profitability, a strong cash position and a pricing gap that the Narrative treats as a research prompt rather than an automatic bargain.

To treat the one year fall of 28.6% as a possible opening rather than a warning, a buyer at today’s price would have to assume Reddit’s growth, cash generation and Google-related risks evolve closer to the Narrative’s expectations than the market’s current fears.

"The market does not usually hand out fifty plus percent off a genuinely good business for no reason, so before that number pulls me in, I go find the reason. If I can’t find one, I assume I built the model wrong before I assume I found a once-in-a-decade gift."
