The Supreme People's Procuratorate recently released a number of typical procuratorial public interest litigation cases. Typical cases in this batch include administrative public interest litigation cases that urge administrative organs to perform their duties in accordance with the law and make up for shortcomings in supervision, as well as civil public interest litigation cases where legal liability infringes on public welfare is investigated in accordance with the law. Among them, the civil public interest lawsuit for the production and sale of toxic and harmful food handled by the procuratorate in Dongying City, Shandong Province, closely focused on illegal addition of chemical ingredients to food. While criminal liability was being investigated in accordance with the law, companies and sales agents that had not been criminally prosecuted were included in the scope of prosecution, and joint infringers in the entire chain were jointly and severally liable for ten times punitive damages, and received full support from the courts to achieve full accountability for criminal punishment and civil compensation. According to statistics, from January to August of this year, procuratorial authorities across the country filed 36 administrative public interest lawsuits, 952 civil public interest lawsuits, and 776 punitive damages in the field of food and drug safety.
