Labor negotiations at Antofagasta's Centinela copper mine in Chile have broken down, and workers are scheduled to go on strike on Wednesday, exacerbating labor tension in the mining sector in the world's largest copper producer. Minera Esperanza and the Distrito Centinela trade union issued a statement: Mandatory mediation led by the Chilean Labor Inspectorate failed to resolve the dispute, and the strike will begin at 8 o'clock local time. The two unions represent over 700 workers. Copper prices are close to historic highs, and labor disputes in the Chilean copper industry continue to heat up. Managers of the Escondida copper mine under BHP Group, the world's largest copper mine, also voted for the strike and are currently in talks with the company under government mediation. If the strike continues for a long time, it will increase market concerns about Chile's copper supply. Chile's copper production this year has already been impacted by accidents, bad weather, and operational problems. Centinela is one of Antofagasta's four mines in Chile. This was the first strike at the mine, which produced 244,400 tons of copper last year.
