Spain's largest trade unions are preparing to call for a general strike on November 11 to focus on housing issues. At that time, the early general election scheduled to be held on November 29 will soon kick off the election campaign. Earlier, the opposition-led parliament vetoed a bill aimed at improving the affordability of housing, and the trade union's action is a response to this. After the bill was vetoed, Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced an early general election. Attorney General Félix Bolaños said in an interview on Wednesday, “I agree with the demands of this strike. Spanish society generally believes that the housing market is not working properly. What are the measures taken by the right and the extreme right? There's nothing.” Opposition parties claim that these protests are a strategy to mobilize voters and influence elections. People's Party spokesman Jaime de los Santos said, “In the past, there were too many reasons to hold demonstrations to defend workers' rights, but they didn't do that. It was clearly a political decision to serve Pedro Sánchez's political agenda.” The union will officially confirm the date of the strike through a vote later on Wednesday. Trade unions are calling for government intervention in the housing market to curb price increases, as wage increases lag far behind rising housing costs.
