04:38 AM EDT, 10/09/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Shares in mobile payments company Airtel Mobile Commerce (AMC.L), d/b/a Airtel Money, were off to a muted start during its debut on the London Stock Exchange on Friday. The company's shares were down nearly 1% from the initial public offering price of 1.96 pounds sterling after initially rising at the start of trading. The IPO price implies a market capitalization of 5.3 billion pounds for the mobile financial services and payments arm of Airtel Africa (AAF.L). The IPO comprises the sale of 270 million existing shares by minority shareholders and a further 27 million shares under an overallotment option, which would bring the final offer size to 582 million pounds, or 11% of Airtel Money's share capital. Airtel Africa, which owns a 77.85% stake in Airtel Money, said in an early October filing that it does not plan to sell shares in the unit in the offer other than pursuant to the overallotment option. The parent entity intends to remain a long-term strategic shareholder and support Airtel Money's next phase of development as an independently listed business. Airtel Money is operational in 13 African countries, with 53 million active users as of June, according to its website. "Today is a landmark moment for Airtel Money. Our listing in London marks an important new chapter for our business and reflects what we have built across Africa and the significant opportunity ahead," Airtel Money Chief Executive Ian Ferrao said. Airtel Africa's shares were down nearly 4% in early morning trading.
