Qin Tian, deputy director of the Middle East Research Institute of the China Institute of Modern International Relations, analyzed that the Houthis, anti-Houthis forces in Yemen and Saudi Arabia have three main points of contention: first, competing for control of important areas along the Red Sea coast in southwestern Yemen; second, competing for strategic locations including Taiz, a major town in southern Yemen; and third, using this war to shape a regional and international situation favorable to them. After the war broke out in Yemen, Saudi Arabia continued to seek foreign aid, especially under the framework of the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, to seek aid from regional powers such as Pakistan and Turkey. This is Saudi Arabia's effort to shape a regional alliance beneficial to itself. However, the Houthis are also uneasy about being only a force within Yemen; they hope to become a force with international influence, being confronted, and valued.
