Recent comments from ING currency specialists on Federal Reserve policy and a firmer dollar have put ING Groep (ENXTAM:INGA) in focus for investors who are watching how global rate expectations affect large European banks.
Recent trading has been choppy for ING Groep, with the share price easing over the past week and month. The latest close sits at €29.63, and the year-to-date share price return of 21.01% and 1-year total shareholder return of 49.28% point to momentum that has cooled in the short term but remains strong over a multi-year horizon, supported by a 3-year total shareholder return of 187.15% and a 5-year total shareholder return of 224.37%.

ING Groep’s recent pullback could either be a simple mood swing driven by rate headlines, or a cleaner reflection of where the underlying business now stands. Which story does the current valuation really tell?
ING Groep trades at €29.63 against a narrative fair value of €32.03, which frames the recent pullback as pricing in only limited remaining upside rather than a fresh bargain.
ING Groep certainly has been having the better of my fair valuation back in August of last year, with shares of the Dutch bank rising some 3 Euros or more than 10 per cent up and above the fair price I had calculated back then. By the same token, that definitely renders it priced to perfection now. The war on the Persian Gulf has been developing into a stand-off without an end in sight, elevating energy prices into the foreseeable future; the low-hanging fruit in the banking business on the continent have been harvested, and multiples at the very least and for these reasons will not expand any further from here. What''s more, a current discount rate of some 6 per cent is certainly not adequate for risks rising everywhere in the financial world; I deem around 9 per cent more on the mark, which taken altogether leaves a further 5 per cent upside at best. Hence, the shares are a classic hold now and should be monitored for partial profit-taking once markets might begin to shift into correction mode.

Still, ING Groep’s story could change quickly if European infrastructure spending slows or if higher required discount rates reduce what investors are willing to pay.
