07:38 AM EDT, 10/11/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The European Union leaders will reportedly meet regarding proposed safeguards as it plans to reduce Chinese hybrid car imports by more than half, Bloomberg News reported Oct. 10, citing people familiar with the matter. The mechanism, which could halve exports to 400,000 annually, could potentially be tariff-rate quotas. The sources said that the safeguards would take effect in December if approved by the bloc. The meeting follows European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic's talks with China, in which the two parties reached a "shared understanding" on the export reduction. The commission did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires. (Market Chatter news is derived from conversations with market professionals globally.
