New Zealand's ruling National Party said that the current state of the country's debt burden and fiscal deficit means that now is not the time to cut taxes. Finance spokeswoman Nicola Willis said in Wellington on Monday that the top priority right now is to reduce debt and invest money to guarantee first-line public services, especially in the health and infrastructure sectors. The National Party announced the fiscal plan before the November 7 general election and made the above remarks at the same time. The party wrote in its policy document: “Once financial accounts return to profits and surpluses continue to grow, the National Party government will only consider tax cuts. But the current priority goal is to deliver on expectations, achieve a fiscal surplus, and reduce debt.”
