Listen to the news

Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS), with a market capitalization of approximately $10.5 billion, is a major American healthcare provider that operates hospitals and other healthcare facilities through its subsidiaries. Based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, the company offers a range of services, including acute care, behavioral health, physician practice management, health insurance, and healthcare consulting.

UHS is set to report its Q3 earnings on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after the market closes. Ahead of the release, analysts expect the company to report diluted EPS of $5.37, down 5.6% from $5.69 in the year-ago quarter. However, UHS has exceeded Wall Street’s EPS estimates in three of the past four quarters, while missing on another occasion.

For fiscal 2026, analysts expect UHS to report EPS of $22.93, up 5.5% from $21.74 in fiscal 2025. EPS is projected to grow another 5.5% year over year to $24.18 in fiscal 2027.

UHS stock has declined 12% over the past 52 weeks, significantly underperforming the S&P 500 Index ($SPX), which returned 16%, and the State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV), which gained 18.5% over the same period.

Universal Health Services’ stock has underperformed amid weak comparable-store sales trends over the past two years, suggesting limited opportunities to expand in existing markets. Additionally, its low free cash flow margin of 4.6% over the past five years has constrained its ability to fund investments, increase share buybacks, or raise dividends.

In a strategic move to strengthen its behavioral-health offerings, UHS completed its acquisition of Talkspace on August 17, combining its extensive behavioral-health network with Talkspace’s nationwide virtual mental-health platform. The deal aims to create a more integrated care model spanning virtual therapy and psychiatry, outpatient services, crisis intervention, and inpatient treatment. Following the announcement, UHS shares rose 1.5% in the next trading session.

Analysts remain somewhat bullish on UHS, with the stock carrying a consensus “Moderate Buy” rating. Of the 20 analysts covering the stock, six recommend a “Strong Buy,” 13 rate it a “Hold,” and one recommends a “Moderate Sell.” Meanwhile, the average price target of $193.35 implies potential upside of 9% from the current share price.
