Micron (MU) shares closed lower on Monday as Chinese rival ChangXin Memory Technologies' latest update renewed concerns about competition in server memory. At an industry event in Shanghai, CXMT management outlined progress on a denser memory-cell architecture and revealed plans to introduce a server product using that technology before year-end.
Despite today’s decline, Micron stock is trading at more than 3x its price at the start of 2026.
According to ChangXin, its planned server-memory product will use a 4F² architecture designed to increase storage density; Samsung and SK Hynix (SKHY) are also pursuing advances in this area.
For MU shares, the potential threat extends beyond losing individual orders. If the Chinese rival successfully commercializes denser chips at competitive costs, customers will have another credible supplier, potentially weakening Micron’s pricing power. This could pressure margins even as memory demand grows.
However, this remains a prospective competitive risk; the announced launch timetable alone does not establish how quickly CXMT can deliver substantial volumes or secure widespread adoption.
Micron’s latest financial results also provide a tangible counterweight to competitive fears.
On Sept. 30, the Nasdaq-listed giant recorded $54.23 billion in Q4 revenue, representing a little under 5x growth on a year-over-year basis.
Management also issued bullish guidance for $61.5 billion in revenue, making D.A. Davidson lift its price target for MU to a Street high of $3,000, indicating more than 200% upside potential.
For its constructive stance, the firm cited an underappreciated multi-year growth opportunity, and the options market seems to agree with it as well.
The put-to-call ratio on contracts expiring mid-December sits at 0.64x as of this writing, with the upper price set at $1,120 indicating potential for a more than 13% rally through the remainder of 2026.
While not nearly as bullish as D.A. Davidson, other Wall Street firms also currently favor owning MU stock for the long term.
The consensus rating on Micron Technology sits at “Strong Buy,” with the mean price target of about $1,563 signaling potential upside of nearly 60% from current levels.
