On October 12, Ambassador Sun Lei, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, stated in his statement during the general debate on the Fourth Committee of the General Assembly that at present, the global decolonization process has not yet been completed. China supports the decolonization process of 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories and the tireless efforts of the local people to fight for the right to self-determination. China urges those countries that have implemented or benefited from the colonial system to show political will, assume historical responsibilities, and make amends for the consequences of colonization. At the same time, we must stop following the colonial mentality, oppose hegemonism and power politics, not harm the interests of other countries or interfere in their internal affairs, and truly implement the principles of sovereign equality and non-interference in internal affairs in international relations. China calls on the international community to return to the original intention of the United Nations Charter, speed up the decolonization process, eradicate the legacy of colonialism, and maintain international fairness and justice. Sun Lei said that both the Malvinas Islands issue and Western Sahara issue are historical legacies of colonialism. China firmly supports Argentina's just claim for sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands. China has always maintained that the parties concerned with the Western Sahara issue will arrive at a just, lasting and acceptable solution within the framework of international law through equal consultations based on the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and relevant Security Council resolutions as an important basis.
