Today, China's first small and medium-sized pumped energy storage project put into operation during the “15th Five-Year Plan” period, the first unit of the CGN Hubei Tuanfeng Weijiachong Pumped Storage Power Plant, was put into commercial operation. The project is located in Tuanfeng County, Huanggang City, Hubei Province, with a total installed capacity of 298,000 kilowatts, and two reversible water pump hydroturbine generator sets with a stand-alone capacity of 149,000 kilowatts were installed. A pumped storage power station consists of two upper and lower reservoirs and a water transmission power generation system. When the electricity consumption of the power grid is low, it pumps water to store energy, and discharges water to generate electricity during peak electricity use, which is equivalent to installing a “giant power bank” for the power grid.
