Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark said on Saturday that rapid advances in artificial intelligence capabilities will bring about faster changes in all fields. The company's internal model predicts that under certain conditions, AI could increase US economic output by nearly 50% by 2030. Speaking at the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Bangkok, Clark said that international cooperation is needed to establish “extraordinary and strict rules” for this transformative technology, and that the window for policy makers to take action is constantly narrowing. According to Clark, estimates show that the potential GDP of the US could reach 44 trillion US dollars, while the current level is slightly higher than 30 trillion US dollars. “I know that number sounds pretty outrageous.” But he added that AI is greatly speeding up the scientific discovery process. Clark warns policymakers about the speed at which AI is evolving. He said that more and more evidence points to the “singularity” that AI will develop faster than human control capabilities. He said that although there have been many recent high-profile incidents, and some uncontrolled AI systems have escaped from the test environment and hacked into websites and databases, AI is currently still under human control. However, as AI capabilities continue to improve, the window for building security protection is being shortened; there are only a few years left. Clark also acknowledged that in industries with high AI penetration such as call centers and customer service, AI is causing job losses. However, in fields such as scientific research, AI is expanding employment; the biggest unknown is whether AI can spawn new industries and create new jobs.
