What IREN Bears Saw Before A 54% Drop

Listen to the news

If you only glanced at headlines about IREN signing multi billion AI cloud deals with Microsoft and NVIDIA, it might be hard to square that story with what showed up in your brokerage account. Investors who held IREN over the past year are down 54.4%, including dividends. If you were weighing a position back in October 2025, which warning signs in the later Q4 2026 revenue and loss figures would have mattered most to you?

Narratives are how investors here put a case on the record, with explicit assumptions about revenue, margins and the multiple. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

IREN has already moved. Pinpoint other ways to investigate the theme among 55 AI infrastructure stocks.

The Two Stories IREN Investors Were Choosing Between

The shares cost US$61.83 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at IREN then had to decide which story felt more convincing.

The bullish narrative put Fair Value at US$72.52, framed around 40.0% revenue growth, a 24.0% profit margin and a future P/E of 60.0x over 5 years. That view leaned on IREN’s renewable powered Bitcoin mining, its expansion toward 30 EH/s, and its early moves into AI and HPC services.

The more cautious case set Fair Value at US$29.55, despite assuming 45.6% revenue growth and a 52.7% profit margin with a 15.3x future P/E over 3 years. This perspective focused on risks from heavy capital expenditure, debt funded expansion, volatile Bitcoin linked income, and rising energy and regulatory pressures on large data centers.

What The Results Changed For The IREN Story

IREN signed multi billion AI cloud agreements with Microsoft, NVIDIA and others, and reported over US$4b in contracted 2026 run rate and very large planned capital expenditure funded partly by GPU financing and customer prepayments. That supported the bullish focus on AI data centers. In the same period, the company reported revenue of US$137.2m and a net loss of US$684.0m in Q4 2026, with net margin falling from 94.3% to a very large negative level, which challenged both profit assumptions. Overall, the evidence cut both ways.

The key assumption was that rapid contract wins would quickly translate into durable profitability. For another AI infrastructure stock, it would be important to check that claim against the trend in reported net income and margin, not just contract value or run rate headlines.

What You Would Be Paying For In IREN Today

At a share price of US$26.99, IREN now trades well below where many holders bought over the past year, while this selected Narrative’s Fair Value still sits above that level based on its own assumptions.

The core pitch has shifted from pure Bitcoin exposure to IREN as an early AI infrastructure platform built on low cost renewable power. A buyer today would need to believe the AI and HPC build out can offset Bitcoin cyclicality and past dilution.

"Over the past year, that "PR effort" proved to be the single most important, high-conviction part of the thesis. I watched IREN's management execute relentlessly, moving far ahead of its mining competitors."

  • Company 2 - 32% below our estimate - shifts from individual servers to higher margin integrated data center building block solutions.
  • Company 3 - 40% below our estimate - ramps new manufacturing and supply capacity for higher margin protective films and services.
