According to Yonhap News Agency on the 20th, South Korea's Supreme Court handed down a final verdict in the “Hwaseong Battery Factory Fire” case on the same day and sentenced Park Soon-hyun, the representative of the company involved to 4 years in prison. In September 2025, South Korea's Suwon District Court, the court of first instance, sentenced Park Soon-hyun to 15 years in prison for violating the Major Disasters Punishment Law and the Industrial Safety and Health Act. The court found that Park Soon-hyun violated the obligation to keep emergency exits and evacuation routes open, failed to fulfill his responsibility to ensure safety and health, and there was a causal relationship with the death of the employee. In April of this year, the Suwon High Court, which conducted a second trial, held that Park Soon-hyun was not under the legal obligation to set up an emergency exit, nor did he violate the emergency export maintenance obligation. Therefore, it overturned the first instance's guilty verdict against the relevant section. At the same time, it considered reaching a settlement with the victim's family, and the sentence was drastically reduced to 4 years. On the 20th, the Supreme Court of Korea found that the second instance verdict was reasonable, rejected the appeal and protest, and upheld the second instance verdict.
