Mastercard Taps Coinbase, Cloudflare as AI Agents Learn to Pay

Mastercard (NYSE:MA) opened early access to its AI agent payment system Monday, following pilots with Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN), Base and Cloudflare.

How the Payment System Actually Works

Mastercard said in a statement shared with The Block that developers can now test Agent Pay for Machines, including its buyer- and seller-side APIs, developer toolkit, and sandbox environment.

The company first announced the project in June, building in support for spending controls alongside card, bank account, and stablecoin payments.

Mastercard demonstrated the system at Cloudflare Connect, where marketing agency Hype assigned an AI agent to prepare a campaign for a protein bar launch.

The agent bought social media research from AIsa and ordered eight campaign images from Cloudflare AI Gateway, all within a budget Hype had approved, completing nine total payments across the two providers.

Why Coinbase and Base Handle the Crypto Side

The agent paid using Coinbase’s x402 protocol, a system that lets websites and AI agents request and send payments automatically, without a human clicking “buy.”

When a merchant needed payment, the system flagged it, checked that the agent’s payment was valid, then released the service. Mastercard said these payments can be grouped together and settled later instead of handling each one separately.

Coinbase supplied the digital wallet that funded the agent during the test, while Base, Coinbase’s own blockchain, handled the actual transfer of funds.

BVNK, a stablecoin payments company Mastercard bought in August, managed the agent’s wallet and processed the payments through Mastercard’s existing payment network, in either regular currency or stablecoins. Sellers could choose how they wanted to get paid.

“The web gave software a way to communicate. APIs gave software a way to use services. Now AI agents need a way to pay for them,” Mastercard said. “That’s what we’re building.”

Where MA Stands Technically

Mastercard shares rose nearly 1% to $621 Monday, testing rising trendline resistance near $624 to $625 after a sharp October rally.

The stock trades above all four major EMAs, a setup that supports the current uptrend.

Key levels for MA:

  • $640: next target if that resistance breaks
  • $596 to $590: support zone below current price
