Wintrust: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Listen to the news

Key Points

  • Wintrust generated $239 million in net income during the third quarter.

  • Illinois deposits grew 9.2% year over year in the core market, double the state's 4.4% growth rate.

  • Total loans increased by 9% to $4.7 billion year over year.

On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 20, 2026, Wintrust (NASDAQ:WTFC) announced a seventh consecutive quarter of record net income. Core deposit expansion and steady lending margins give the regional lender a stable foundation to expand its Midwestern footprint. Three takeaways from the call stand out.

1. Core Deposit Growth Fuels Franchise Expansion

Deposits provide the cheap funding that fuels loan growth, keeping borrowing costs down when competitors must pay more to attract cash. In Illinois, deposit growth reached 9% year over year, outpacing state and national averages.

Growing core deposits remains the single most important thing we do to enhance the value of our franchise and to ensure our continued success.

2. Interest Rate Hedges Protect Net Interest Margin

Shifting interest rates can squeeze bank profits if loan yields and deposit costs move out of sync. Management maintains derivative contracts that lock in yields, keeping the net interest margin (the difference between interest earned on assets and interest paid on deposits) steady near 3.5%.

And given our balance sheet structure and our established interest rate hedging positions, we believe that our interest rate sensitivity should continue to remain relatively neutral even with a few rate cuts in either direction.
-- David Alan Dykstra, Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer

3. Early Problem Spotting Keeps Credit Quality Clean

Lenders face constant risk when commercial borrowers stumble during economic shifts. By charging down troubled loans fast and focusing on long-standing borrower relationships, Wintrust kept nonperforming loans (loans where borrowers stopped making required payments) around 0.3% of total loans.

This quarter again demonstrates our commitment to identifying problems early, and charging down loans where appropriate. Our goal as always is to stay ahead of potential credit challenges.
-- Richard Murphy, Vice Chairman and Chief Lending Officer

Looking Ahead

Customer activity across Midwestern commercial markets is holding steady, and leadership isn't hiding its satisfaction with borrowing demand.

As we close out the year, our targets remain unchanged for the fourth quarter. Based on continued positive feedback from clients, solid pipelines, and the unique market position we occupy, we expect loan and deposit growth in the mid to high single digits.
-- Timothy S. Crane, President and Chief Executive Officer

A community-focused service model, localized branch density, and disciplined credit underwriting give Wintrust structural advantages against mega-bank rivals. Executives are keeping a close watch on deposit pricing discipline and credit quality to maintain returns.

Our capital position remains strong and increased during the quarter. Capital priorities we have discussed on prior calls remain unchanged. As always, our team focuses on delivering the exceptional customer service that is our key differentiator. Going into 2027, we feel good about our competitive position in the market, our ability to continue to grow our business, and to deliver value for our shareholders.
-- Timothy S. Crane, President and Chief Executive Officer
