Abbott Laboratories just reported Q3 2026 earnings with adjusted EPS at US$1.42 and comparable sales growth of 7%, yet the stock slipped about 1.9% to US$100.51 into today’s close. Traders are treating this like a routine quarter. The real story sits in profitability. Gross margin reached 57.2% and operating margin touched 23.4%, both higher than a year ago. This matters for a medical devices and diagnostics heavyweight, where every point of margin shapes long term value far more than a one day price reaction.

Ask Charlie what Abbott said post-spin margins look like.
Abbott Laboratories has pitched devices and diagnostics as the future earnings engine. Q3 gives an early read on how that promise is translating into real business.
"The main thing that has to go right is that Abbott Laboratories continues to convert its medical technology pipeline in areas like continuous glucose monitoring, electrophysiology and cancer diagnostics into sustained sales growth and margin expansion, while managing Nutrition legal and regulatory risks."
Medical Devices grew 8% with electrophysiology and rhythm leading, Cancer Diagnostics advanced 14%, and Libre sales rose 8%. Gross and operating margins both improved, and management is targeting further margin lift once Nutrition is separated, so the execution path appears aligned with that ambition so far.
Legal drag around Nutrition was a core worry for Abbott Laboratories, and the quarter reframes that risk rather than removing it.
"The large infant formula settlements of about US$670 million for NEC litigation and US$385 million related to the 2022 Sturgis recall show that Abbott Laboratories still carries legal and regulatory exposure in Nutrition, and further actions or follow on claims could keep legal costs elevated and hold back net margins and earnings."
Q3 margins expanded despite those past settlements, and management now plans a tax free spin off of the US$8.5b Nutrition unit. That move ring fences most Nutrition exposure but does not fully erase reputational and policy scrutiny, including the ongoing focus on Abbott’s tax practices.
