What Tenaris Buyers Were Betting On

Simply Wall St·10/22/2026 18:30:23
Listen to the news

Tenaris spent the year announcing new deepwater service hubs and Canadian mill upgrades, yet the real headline for holders sat on their brokerage statements. Investors who held Tenaris over the past year are up 63.6%, including dividends. If you had been deciding on 22 October 2025 whether to buy, what exactly would you have needed to believe about those contracts, tariffs and capex bets to feel comfortable pressing the button?

This theme extends beyond Tenaris. See which of 42 power grid technology and infrastructure stocks may still merit a closer look.

The Two Tenaris Stories Investors Were Arguing About

The shares cost €15.27 at the start of the period. Anyone considering Tenaris then had to decide whether oil infrastructure demand would hold up long enough to reward fresh capital or whether the energy transition would steadily eat away at the business.

The bullish narrative put Fair Value at €23.27, an implied price if its assumptions played out. It leaned on deepwater expansion and infrastructure replacement to support revenue growing 4.8% a year with profit margins only edging down to 16.5%.

The cautious view saw Fair Value at €13.31 and treated the global energy shift as the main threat. Under that script, annual revenue would fall 3.6% and margins would compress to 12.5% as renewables, ESG pressure and low cost rivals eroded Tenaris’s pricing power.

What The Results Changed For The Tenaris Thesis

Tenaris committed C$306 million to upgrade its Sault Ste. Marie facility, plus began domestic TN 95EY production in Ontario, which backed the bullish story about deepwater and higher spec pipe needing more local, higher value capacity. The measured results pulled the other way. Q2 2026 revenue and net income were lower than Q2 2025, and net margin slipped from 17.2% to 16.1%, so profitability progress stayed unproven. Overall, the evidence cut both ways.

The useful lesson is simple. When a story hangs on stronger margins, do not just track new projects or tariffs. Watch whether net income and net margin, quarter by quarter, actually move toward the margin the thesis assumed.

What The Tenaris Price Already Asks You To Believe

Tenaris now trades at €24.81, and the selected Narrative places its Fair Value below that level. The gap reflects concern that recent softer sales, lower EBITDA and higher structural costs could limit how much of the past one year share price gain is backed by operating progress.

That Narrative argues the key question today is whether heavy spending on localized, higher spec capacity can support steady volumes and margins despite shipment delays, logistics costs and energy transition pressures. A buyer at today’s price is effectively assuming that cash generation and margin resilience will hold up, so how do those cost and timing risks cut into that bet?

"The main thing that has to go right is that Tenaris converts its heavy spending on localized capacity expansions and higher spec products into stable volumes and margins, despite ongoing logistics issues, tariffs and postponed Middle East shipments. The numbers imply that Tenaris’s current share price already bakes in continued strong cash generation and high capital returns, even as recent quarters show softer sales, lower EBITDA and higher structural cost headwinds, which leaves limited room for disappointment."

  • Company 2 - 43% below our estimate - replaces legacy tolling hardware as vehicle fleets adopt 4G GNSS compliance units.
  • Company 3 - 42% below our estimate - supplies higher margin high voltage connectors as grid operators upgrade and harden infrastructure.
