What Cloudflare Buyers Were Betting On

Listen to the news

If you had been weighing Cloudflare on 1 January 2026, the call did not look easy. Investors who held Cloudflare from the start of the year are up 54.9%, including dividends. Recent headlines around PHP2Shell, AI agents, government certifications and board scrutiny only sharpen the question. Back then, how were early buyers weighing rapid AI and security opportunities against high P/E assumptions, rising losses and mounting regulatory and reputational pressure?

The move put Cloudflare in the middle of this trade. Scan 55 AI infrastructure stocks for other companies exposed to it.

The Two Cloudflare Stories Investors Had To Compare

The shares cost US$197 at the start of the period, and anyone considering Cloudflare had to decide which of two stories felt more convincing.

The optimistic case leaned on a Fair Value of US$209, a price implied by expectations of 26.5% annual revenue growth and profit margins turning positive at 4.6% within three years.

The cautious view pointed to a Fair Value of US$116, based on assumed 24.8% annual revenue growth, but with concern that rising regulatory costs and hyperscaler pressure could weigh on profitability.

What The Cloudflare Evidence Actually Tested

The sharpest test came from Cloudflare’s Q2 2026 report, where revenue reached US$696.1 million compared with US$512.3 million a year earlier. That supported the optimistic case on top line and AI demand, while a net loss of US$169.9 million and net margin moving from 9.8% to 24.4% below zero left the profitability assumption unproven. Overall, the evidence cut both ways.

The key lesson is simple. When a story leans on future margins, track the net margin line and whether losses shrink alongside revenue, not just the growth rate or new product headlines.

What Cloudflare’s Current Price Already Assumes

Cloudflare now trades at US$304, so anyone buying today is stepping in after a strong run from US$197. The selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below that level, which frames today’s quote as a richer entry point rather than a clear-cut bargain.

The Narrative focuses on Cloudflare’s role in securing a possible quantum transition instead of building quantum machines. For today’s price to hold up, a buyer must believe that post-quantum security continues to reinforce customer trust even if it does not become a large, separate revenue stream.

"If Q-Day risk is moving closer, the migration layer may matter as much as the companies trying to build quantum computers. Cloudflare sits closer to the trust-chain side: internet security, network protection, identity, traffic, certificates, and enterprise infrastructure."

Cloudflare And A Different Toll

Cloudflare points you to security and AI at the network edge. One step away, another recurring problem keeps surfacing for the same customers.

Every AI project and internet-facing workload needs somewhere reliable to run. That often means cloud platforms that rent out computing, storage and developer tools.

One huge provider sells that backbone, from core servers to productivity software embedded in daily work. It charges as organizations consume computing and higher tier services.

As more firms test agents, automation and heavier models, that meter keeps ticking. The unresolved question is how much AI spending settles into that utility-like role.

That argument has a Narrative and a number behind it. → See the company one Narrative values 15% above its price
