Standard commercial renewal pricing increased 5.7% in the third quarter.
After-tax net investment income rose 16% year over year.
Selective Insurance returned 63% of quarterly net income to shareholders.
On its third-quarter 2026 earnings conference call, held on Oct. 23, 2026, Selective Insurance (NASDAQ:SIGI) highlighted a 16.9% operating return on common equity, a metric measuring profitability relative to shareholder capital. For long-term shareholders, the insurer's focus on shedding unprofitable policies while expanding into non-standard risk markets signals a commitment to disciplined margin growth over volume.
Three takeaways from management's comments stand out for long-term investors.
Management is intentionally allowing underperforming accounts to walk away. In Standard Commercial Lines, which covers small and mid-sized businesses, the company aggressively raised prices on its lowest-performing accounts, choosing profit margins over retaining policy volume.
Retention in our best-performing cohorts remains strong at 90%, while retention in our lowest-performing cohorts, which represented approximately 10% of premium, declined to 52%, down from 79% a year ago.

The insurer is expanding its Excess and Surplus segment, known as E&S, which covers non-standard commercial risks that traditional policies decline. By connecting retail agents directly to its E&S underwriting platform, the company creates a new growth engine across broader markets.
In E&S, our retail access initiative has moved from build-out to execution. The structural investments are largely complete. Agency appointments and our underwriting model are in place, and early indicators are encouraging.

A strong balance sheet gave leadership the flexibility to return substantial capital while funding future expansion. The board raised the quarterly dividend by 12% and authorized a new $200 million share repurchase program, reinforcing its commitment to shareholder returns.
During the quarter, we returned approximately 63% of after-tax net income to shareholders through our regular dividend and $55 million of opportunistic share repurchases.
-- Patrick Brennan, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Underwriting discipline leads the strategy as management navigates shifting market conditions across casualty insurance lines. The company benefits from regional agency networks and expanded digital underwriting models, while leadership watches pricing trends relative to loss costs.
Our commitment to underwriting and pricing discipline throughout the cycle underlies our long-term track record of growth and profitability.

Targeted investments in predictive tools and workflow integration aim to enhance decision quality without inflating structural operating costs over time.
The actions we are taking today strengthen the earning power of our portfolio and position us to deliver long-term value for our policyholders, distribution partners, employees, and shareholders.
