MSFT Stock Alert: What to Know as Microsoft Offers Buyouts to 60,000 Employees

Microsoft (MSFT) shares are in focus on Tuesday after the tech titan offered voluntary buyouts to about 60,000 of its employees as it works to contain costs amid heavy artificial intelligence (AI) investment. The initiative covers roughly 27% of MSFT’s global workforce, although the eventual number of departures will depend on participation.

Microsoft stock has been rewarding for investors in recent months, currently up about 25% over the past six months.

Significance of the Buyouts for Microsoft Stock

The time-limited program covers eligible staff at internal level 70 and below across participating teams in the U.S., Canada, India, and the U.K. A source told Reuters that affected divisions include Copilot, Xbox, Windows, finance, and HR, while marketing, commercial business, and security are excluded.

For MSFT investors, the potential benefit is a lower recurring payroll bill, which could help protect profitability as infrastructure spending expands.

However, 60,000 eligible employees does not really mean 60,000 confirmed departures. Plus, severance would increase upfront costs before savings emerge.

The investment takeaway: Greater spending discipline may support Microsoft shares, but investors need participation figures and management’s savings estimates before evaluating its effect on future earnings.

Technicals Warrant Buying MSFT Shares Ahead of Earnings

The aforementioned news arrives just a day before Microsoft is scheduled to report its Q1 results. Consensus is for the behemoth to report $4.71 in earnings per share (EPS) for its first quarter, which would represent about 14% growth on a year-over-year basis.

Heading into the earnings event, MSFT stock sits firmly above its major moving averages (MAs), with an RSI in the late 50s indicating buyers remain in control across multiple timeframes.

Wall Street’s Consensus View on Microsoft

Wall Street analysts remain largely bullish on MSFT stock heading into the giant’s earnings release on Oct. 28.

The consensus rating on Microsoft sits at “Strong Buy,” with the mean price target of roughly $595 indicating potential upside of nearly 12% from current levels.
