Weekend Pricing Loopholes: Arbitrage and Risks of Tokenized Stock Borrowing

According to Woofun AI, Morpho officially launched the stock token lending market on Robinhood (HOOD.US) Chain on October 22, marking the evolution of Robinhood stock tokens from simple trading assets to all-weather financial instruments with collateral financing functions.

This move allows users to borrow tokenized stocks as collateral into stablecoins even on weekends when the NASDAQ market is closed, completely breaking the trading time boundary of traditional stock markets.

This demand was confirmed by the explosive growth in trading volume during the non-trading period. According to statistics from crypto researcher Tom Wan (Entropy), between September 24 and October 23, 59% of stock token trading volume on the Robinhood platform occurred outside the regular US trading period: of the total volume of $3.7 billion, the regular session was only $1.5 billion, and the off-market $2.18 billion comprised $677 million before the market, $608 million overnight, $363 million after the market, and $532 million over the weekend (the weekend was part of the outside market volume) .

At the same time, competition dynamics are also accelerating: Since September 25, Aave has launched a similar lending service for Coinbase (COIN.US) tokenized shares, further intensifying the competition between agreements.

The borrowing thresholds and geographical restrictions of traditional brokerage firms form a deep background to the rise of tokenized lending. In the US, opening a T-regulated margin account requires meeting the $2,000 threshold, and can only lend at most 50% of the stock market value; the credit threshold for pledged assets of SCHW.US is as high as $100,000, and the interest rate is 8.27%. In all of these services, the lender holds collateral and independently determines credit eligibility. Overseas, for example, the Free Remittance Plan (LRS) issued by the Reserve Bank of India clearly restricts overseas speculative transactions, causing Vested Finance to only provide cash accounts. The Indian branch of IBKR.US also prohibits domestic residents from participating in overseas margin products, making it impossible for a large number of overseas investors to use their positions for financing.

The tokenization mechanism has fundamentally restructured the utility of assets. Take Indian investors as an example. If they hold Nvidia shares worth 20,000 US dollars through the platform, they can only trade and cannot pledge loans under the traditional model, and the asset utility is far lower than that of local US holders.

Although Yingtou Securities opened its business to multinational clients in the third quarter of 2026, the average yield on margin loans was 4.25%, and the Nigerian retail investment app Trove launched a double leverage service for US stocks in August, the prevailing minimum asset threshold and complicated documents still pose an obstacle. Tokenization deposits collateral assets into users' own wallets, and any lending agreement that recognizes this token can accept it as collateral, thus enabling asset revitalization worldwide.

There are significant differences in collateral discount rates (haircuts) and settlement thresholds between platforms, reflecting different risk control logics. Kraken has supported 10 xStock tokens as futures and margin collateral since July 3. Among them, index tracking targets such as SpyX are discounted by 10%, individual stocks such as Nvidia are discounted by 20%, and highly volatile individual stocks such as Robinhood itself are discounted by up to 30%. Aave allows users to stake 7 types of Coinbase stock tokens to borrow to USDC. Microsoft has a maximum pledge rate of 79%, Nvidia of 70%, and Tesla and Meta of 65%.

Notably, Aave's collateral coefficient ranges from 65% to 79%, and the settlement line is set above it. This difference is a buffer left for weekend price jumps. Paboxo launched Robinhood Chain on October 19, and Morpho followed suit. Its liquidation threshold was set at 62.5% for Nvidia and 77% for SPY. The first batch included SpaceX tokens, Apple, Tesla (same 62.5%), and Alphabet (same 77%). The index enjoyed more relaxed settlement conditions due to less fluctuation.

According to data compiled by Woofun AI, user growth data reveals the influx of new users and changes in the role of gatekeepers. As of October 18, the number of wallet addresses that initiated loans on Aave had surged from 8 to 144, and three-quarters of these addresses had never used Aave on the Base Chain before. Llamarisk, which is responsible for setting risk parameters, found that the vast majority of lending activities occurred during the stock market closure period, and these new users completed their loans during a time window where traditional brokerage firms were unable to provide services.

However, issuers are still in control of the entry floodgates: Robinhood and Coinbase stock tokens are prohibited from being sold to US residents. Furthermore, holders' rights are limited. Robinhood stock tokens are issued by Robinhood Assets (Jersey) Ltd., and are debt securities, and holders cannot determine an interest in the underlying company; Coinbase stock tokens are certified by a special carrier, and dividends are reinvested rather than directly distributed.

On the basis of loans, four types of derivative application scenarios were quickly set up to generate benefits for different participants. The first type is direct access to cash. Aave founder Stani Kulechov pointed out that its stock token lending market interest rate is about 5%. Although it is higher than Yingtou Securities, the advantage is that there is no minimum asset threshold and loans can be made on Saturdays. The second type is leveraged trading. PendleLoop launched by Pendle allows users to cycle through similar tokens after Aave borrows in USDC, establish a 2.6-4.2 times leverage exposure with one click, and is exempt from handling fees until December 31, far exceeding the conventional double leverage limit for US retail margin accounts.

The third type is trading margin. Kraken supports xStock tokens as a security deposit for futures positions. The maximum amount for a single target is between 100,000 and 1 million US dollars. As of September, there were more than 300,000 users holding xStock, and users can use Apple token positions to participate in Bitcoin futures trading. The fourth type is fund pool access. Eligible users can borrow USDG from Morpho Treasury operated by Steakhouse Financial through Robinhood Earn. This week, about 75,000 wallets were funded in the vault, with a total size of US$543.6 million. Steakhouse has approved funding for Robinhood stock token pledge loans, with a market limit of 1 million USDG per loan. Note that the country restrictions on the lender side and the borrower side are not the same: the share token itself is still prohibited from being sold to US residents, but USDG lenders are not restricted as a result.

The distribution of benefits in the industrial chain presents a multi-level structure. The issuer is at the top of the value chain. Robinhood not only issues stock tokens and operates a public chain, but also controls savings apps to profit from floating funds, because Paxos will distribute USDG's reserve proceeds to global dollar network partners; Coinbase replicates this model on the Base chain, and Kraken holds a backed-up (xStocks issuer). Packaging layers such as Pendle don't lend money, but instead route borrowing requests to Aave.

The loan agreement earns interest spreads, but the current return is meager: the Aave stock token lending market has a borrowing limit of $21 million. If all is used up and calculated at a 5% interest rate, the annual interest rate is about $1 million, and most of it goes to the lender. Treasury managers and risk control agencies charge service fees, and Steakhouse decides where to invest the $543 million savings pool. LlamaRisk stipulates that Aave liquidators can enjoy a maximum 5.5% discount when disposing of collateral. Chainlink controls pricing, provides price data sources for Coinbase and Robinhood tokens, and determines when to update and freeze prices.

Market size comparisons and the risk of weekend pricing flaws highlight the industry's potential crisis. As of the end of September, the margin loan scale for clients of Yingtou Securities reached US$105.2 billion, with net interest income of US$1.15 billion in a single quarter, and margin debt in the US market reached US$1.48 trillion in September; in contrast, on October 18, the Aave stock token market loan size was only US$4.08 million, equivalent to 0.004% of Yingtou's credit market. All loans rely on the real-time value of collateral, but the Chainlink stock price forecast is updated from 8 p.m. on Sunday to 8 p.m. on Friday, New York time, and prices are frozen over the weekend.

This has spawned an arbitrage loophole: borrowers can borrow the full amount at Friday's price on Saturday to anticipate a fall at the opening of the market, causing the value of the collateral to fall below the loan principal. If you rely on on-chain weekend trading pricing, you face the problem of scarce liquidity. Aave estimates that selling stock tokens on the Base chain for only $300,000 to $1.1 million can cause 2% price fluctuations, which can easily be manipulated to trigger liquidation. On July 28, 2026, Hynix (SKHY.US) traded only 1 share during the pre-market period on the Korean alternative trading platform Nextrade. The price was 30% lower than the previous closing price. The orchestra fed the abnormal price into Trade.xyz's Hyperliquid contract deployed under the HIP-3 framework — the contract's price tracks Seoul common stock, not the NASDAQ ADR listed on July 10 — directly liquidated 960 accounts involving 57.4 million The dollar position realized a loss of approximately $17.3 million, although the stock price later recovered.

The limitations of oracles determine the inevitability of risk premiums. Even without arbitrage, the time gap itself poses a risk, and market changes throughout the weekend were updated all at once on Sunday evening. In January 2025, news related to DeepSeek came out over the weekend. Nvidia rebounded after falling 17% for a while, and a user with a 60% pledge rate (Aave limit of 70%) would be liquidated in one go before the price rebounds. Borrowers are trying to cope: Paboxo suspended liquidation during traditional market closures, delaying risk until opening; Jupiter's Offerbook introduced 1-30 day term loans without a price settlement mechanism, and the risk premium is included in interest rates. Starting December 6, NASDAQ and NYSE Arca will be able to trade 23 hours a day, five days a week to close the overnight pricing gap, but there are still no official offers over the weekend. Lenders will eventually convert unobservable risks into the collateral discount rate. The loanable ratio of tokenized stocks will inevitably be lower than native stocks, but for users who cannot obtain traditional brokerage services, this is still the only financing method.
