Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) is positioning itself as the gatekeeper for artificial intelligence agents, with OpenAI, Anthropic PBC and Meta Platforms Inc.’s Muse adopting its containment tool.

Every PC to Be ‘the Secure Agent Box‘

The company’s CEO Satya Nadella said on Wednesday’s first-quarter earnings call that Microsoft Execution Containers, or MXC, is “a policy-driven execution layer that governs and contains agents across Windows and other platforms.”

OpenAI, Anthropic and Muse are adopting it, he said, with Meta starting to deploy it across its enterprise environments.

Every PC, in Microsoft’s vision, should be “the secure agent box,” the CEO added.

AI Agent Security Scares Are Piling Up

Microsoft previewed MXC in June and made it generally available earlier this month.

Security becomes “even more critical” as agents gain greater access to enterprise data and systems, Nadella said, and Microsoft’s approach is to “separate intelligence from authority,” enforcing permissions, monitoring and containment outside the model itself.

The push comes amid a string of agent-related security scares in recent months.

Major U.S. banks are restricting third-party AI agents, Axios reported last week, and CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. said a suspected attacker used Claude Code in attacks on South Korean financial institutions.

OpenAI disclosed in July that models in a cybersecurity test circumvented isolation controls and compromised parts of Hugging Face‘s infrastructure.

Top Q1 Estimates, Guides Higher

For the second quarter, Microsoft guided total revenue of $96 billion to $97.1 billion, while analysts expect it at $95.66 billion. Capital expenditure is expected to top $50 billion in the quarter.

Price Action: Shares closed 0.060% lower on Wednesday at $531.01 and climbed 2.88% to $546.30 in extended trading on the results announcement.

Benzinga Edge rankings indicate Microsoft’s stock has a Momentum score in the 86th percentile and a Growth score in the 96th percentile.
