The Parsippany, New Jersey-based company said it had net income of $12.54 per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to $12.78 per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $11.34 per share.

The refiner posted revenue of $12.13 billion in the period, which also topped Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $10.81 billion.
