Revenue excluding fuel increased 6% year over year.
Operational changes eliminated 95 crew starts per week.
Full-year capital expenditures increased to $2.1 billion.
On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 22, 2026, Norfolk Southern (NYSE:NSC) announced a 14% increase in third-quarter revenue. The railroad is expanding operating efficiency while capturing freight demand from highway trucking.
Three things management said stand out.
Management is restructuring train schedules and terminal workflows to handle more freight with fewer resources. These efficiency gains keep the railroad on track to reach at least $650 million in total cost reductions.
That work has us on track to deliver at least $650 million in cumulative cost savings.
-- Brian Barr, Chief Operating Officer
Strong demand across merchandise and intermodal markets allowed the carrier to raise prices and offset rising cost pressures. Stripping out volatile fuel surcharges reveals underlying commercial momentum across every business vertical.
When we look at revenue on a less fuel basis, we delivered a 6% increase to set an all-time record.
-- Ed Elkins, Chief Commercial Officer
Higher diesel prices and constrained trucking capacity are driving shippers toward lower-cost rail alternatives. Norfolk Southern is capturing this volume shift across its intermodal network while expanding service offerings.
What you saw in the quarter is us capturing the increased customer demand.
-- Mark George, President and Chief Executive Officer
Train velocity is accelerating across the network, and management is using that momentum to expand capacity for future growth. The railroad relies on its strong industrial development pipeline, improving train length, and safety records to protect its long-term competitive position. Executives are watching fuel cost volatility and train crew staffing levels as key operational priorities.
The underlying business remains healthy, and we are committed to balancing growth with operational efficiency.
-- Mark George, President and Chief Executive Officer
To prepare for future freight volume, management increased its full-year capital expenditure outlook (the budget allocated for physical equipment and network infrastructure) from $1.9 billion to $2.1 billion. That capital deployment supports long-term network efficiency and positions the business to handle permanent market share gains.
The incremental reinvestment in the franchise is geared toward positioning us to capture growth opportunities that we see on the horizon, as well as to enhance network resilience and efficiencies.
-- Mark George, President and Chief Executive Officer
