Shell (LSE:SHEL) Stock May Be Mispriced After Strong Q3 Results

Simply Wall St·10/30/2026 19:31:12
Listen to the news

Shell went into its Q3 2026 report with the stock at £40.37, up modestly over the past month yet still priced as if the story is running out of steam. The headline result told a different story. Net income for the quarter came in at about US$12.1b on revenue of roughly US$95.3b, marking another quarter of firm profitability in a volatile commodity world.

The share price has barely budged, but the earnings print and the cash generation behind it suggest investors may want to reassess how much pressure this integrated energy company is currently facing.

Like Shell’s profitability but uneasy that the share price is treading water despite solid quarterly earnings and cash generation signals? Scan a focused list of resilient cash producers with sensible balance sheets in the list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (10 results).

Q3 2026 Earnings Summary

  • Revenue (Q3 2026 vs Q3 2025): US$95.3b vs. US$68.2b (up about 40%)
  • Net Income (Excl. Extra Items, Q3 2026 vs Q3 2025): US$12.1b vs. US$5.3b (up about 127%)
  • Basic EPS (Q3 2026 vs Q3 2025): US$2.15 vs. US$0.91 (up about 136%)
  • Total Oil Equivalent Production (Q3 2026 vs Q3 2025): 220.2 MMboe vs. 248.0 MMboe (down about 11%)

Earnings are one thing, but Shell investors who care about valuation tend to focus on the cash that actually drops out of those quarterly headlines. Cash flows tell you what the business can return to owners and how resilient those payouts might be through a cycle.

When you line up Shell's recent cash generation against the current share price and the modeled discounted cash flow estimate, the numbers suggest the stock could be a hefty 40% undervalued.

Shell’s Growth Blueprint Meets Real-World Milestones

Supporters argue Shell’s long-term growth hinges on turning LNG and upstream project plans into tangible volume and cash flow progress.

"Expansion in liquefied natural gas through projects such as LNG Canada, the acquisition of Pavilion Energy and a stated aim for 4% to 5% annual LNG sales growth to 2030 positions Shell to serve rising global gas demand, which can support revenue and cash flow from operations."

Q3 results show that thesis moving from slide deck to execution. The LNG Canada Phase 2 final investment decision and the ARC Resources deal both landed before quarter end, while Integrated Gas and LNG trading were key contributors to the US$21b cash from operations Shell reported for Q3 2026.

Shell Cash Returns Tested Against Reinvestment Fears

One concern is that Shell is leaning too hard into cash returns and starving future growth.

"The heavy reliance on buybacks and a distribution target of 40% to 50% of cash flow from operations, with 17 consecutive quarters of US$3b or more in buybacks and about 25% of shares repurchased in three years, may leave less flexibility for reinvestment just as new resource access in countries like Iraq, Libya and Venezuela opens up."

The latest quarter partly undercuts that worry. Shell still committed to 40% to 50% of cash from operations and a fresh US$5b buyback, and also closed the US$16.5b ARC Resources deal and approved LNG Canada Phase 2. Capital spending guidance of US$23b to US$25b points to ongoing investment rather than a pure cash out story.

Hunt Mispriced Cash Generators

Shell reports solid profitability while its share price remains relatively stable. The real opportunity is identifying potential cash generative stocks that may be undervalued by the market.

  • Company 1 - 29% below our estimate - targets a near doubling of copper equivalent output as delayed Spanish projects secure permits and ramp production.
  • Company 2 - 26% below our estimate - converts a long dated defense order book into higher margins by fixing underperforming divisions and executing complex maritime and electronic warfare programs.
  • Company 3 - 34% below our estimate - expands into larger AI enabled and US opportunities by integrating a concentrated enterprise customer base with its broad IT infrastructure model.
