OpenAI promises that data center campuses directly invested by it in the US will actively reduce electricity consumption when extreme weather or other emergencies put pressure on the power grid. Called the “Grid Guardians Program,” it aims to extend the promises already made in the proposed data center campus in Effingham County, Georgia to the whole of the United States. In this project, OpenAI promised that when the power grid needs to be reduced, the electricity load can be reduced by up to 1 gigawatt, which is roughly equivalent to the electricity consumption of 700,000 households. John McCarrick, head of energy policy at OpenAI, said the move reflects changes in industry thinking and technology, as well as adjustments after absorbing community feedback.
