On November 2, local time, the British government announced a comprehensive immigration reform plan, extending the standard period of residence for most legal immigrants applying for permanent residency from the current 5 to 10 years. Some immigrants may face a longer waiting period. Under the new plan, the British government will implement a permanent residency system based on individual contributions. High-income immigrants can obtain permanent residency status after 3 years as soon as possible, while immigrants arriving in the UK by boat across the English Channel will face stricter restrictions. Previously, the British government planned to extend the permanent residency application period for some foreign workers in the medical and social care industry to 10 or even 15 years, but this proposal was strongly opposed by trade unions and some members of parliament within the ruling Labour Party. As a result of the adjustments, the UK government decided to maintain the standard application period for some medical and nursing industry workers at 5 years. This reform is the latest move by the British government to further tighten immigration policy against the backdrop of a sharp increase in the number of immigrants after Brexit.
