What Columbia Sportswear Holders Saw Early

Simply Wall St·11/03/2026 07:29:42
Listen to the news

If you had looked at Columbia Sportswear a year ago, the story on tariffs, climate risk and sluggish U.S. demand hardly suggested an easy win. Investors who held Columbia Sportswear over the past year are up 44.2%, including dividends. That outcome sits against forecasts that ranged from a cautious premium to fair value to a steep discount. If that kind of split view produced this result, what should you really focus on the next time?

The useful thing about a Narrative is that the reasoning is checkable: the assumptions sit beside the argument, and together they imply an estimated Fair Value you can disagree with.

The Two Columbia Sportswear Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost US$49.61 at the start, and Columbia Sportswear sat between two very different stories that both sounded reasonable.

On the optimistic side, the bull narrative put fair value at US$56.12. That view leaned on share buybacks and a brand relaunch, with assumptions that revenue could grow 2.3% a year and profit margins could settle at 5.0%.

The bear case argued for fair value of US$40. It focused on persistent U.S. tariff pressure and weaker U.S. demand, assuming only 1.3% annual revenue growth and profit margins declining to 4.4%.

What The Columbia Sportswear Results Put To The Test

Q3 2026 results showed Columbia Sportswear lifting net income to US$84.74 million on US$962.58 million of revenue, with net margin at 8.8% versus 5.5% a year earlier. That directly tested the bear case that tariffs and U.S. softness would crush profitability, although flat Q1 2026 sales and ongoing domestic weakness kept the outcome closer to a cautious result rather than a cleanly bullish win.

The key assumption that moved here was profitability resilience. When you review another retailer with a tariff or cost overhang, track the direction of net margin alongside revenue rather than relying on headline earnings surprises alone.

What Columbia Sportswear’s Price Already Assumes

Columbia Sportswear now trades at US$71.12, after a 44.2% gain over the past year. The selected Narrative places its Fair Value below that level, arguing that the recent rerating already bakes in a meaningful uplift in earnings quality and resilience.

For today’s valuation to hold, a buyer has to believe Columbia Sportswear can keep turning ACCELERATE projects, international demand and key franchises into enough higher margin sales to balance tariff and U.S. pressure.

"The main thing that has to go right is that Columbia Sportswear converts its international growth engines, ACCELERATE brand work, and expanding footwear and PFG franchises into enough higher quality revenue to offset U.S. weakness and persistent tariff headwinds."
