S&P Futures Slip Below our Short Range as Midterm Voting Begins

Barchart·11/03/2026 07:57:37
Listen to the news

S&P 500 E-mini futures eased Tuesday as U.S. midterm voting got under way and Apple fell about 4.5% premarket after its earnings. At 8:40 a.m. ET, ES traded at 7,590.50, already below the playbook's short participation range of 7,662.00–7,619.75 and 79.25 points above the 7,511.25 target. All three index option maps are in negative gamma, where dealer hedging tends to amplify moves.

The narrative

Early reports had Dow futures down about 0.8%, S&P futures down about 0.15% and Nasdaq 100 futures slightly higher as AMD and Nvidia rebounded ahead of AMD's results after the close. WTI crude rose to about $98.61 (early quote) after U.S. strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island, gold traded near $3,913 (early quote) and bitcoin near $77,408. September JOLTS and factory orders are due at 10:00 a.m. ET.

Three models, one story

Fut Premarket ref Playbook Price vs playbook Price vs SR pivots 0DTE gamma Trend odds
ES 7,590.50 Short already beyond range, toward target; 79.25 pts to 7,511.25 between S1 and R1 Negative (-$18.31B) 55%
NQ 28,351.50 Short already beyond range, toward target; 267.25 pts to 28,084.25 between S1 and R1 Negative (-$221.08M) 55%
RTY 2,830.9 Short already beyond range, toward target; 37.6 pts to 2,793.3 between S1 and R1 Negative (-$6.24M) 75%

ES, NQ and RTY line up on the short side: all three are short in the playbook, already beyond their participation ranges, between S1 and R1, and in negative gamma. ES and NQ sit well below their flips (SPX 54 points, NDX 129 points), while RTY is 2 points from its flip, so its regime label is fragile.

Today's resistance grid

VX – Volatility Nov-26 Long 19.60 – 20.05 18.90 22.85

The ES and NQ zones sit far overhead: ES's band starts about 176 points above price. RTY is the one to watch: its 2,847.8–2,862.0 zone starts about 17 points above 2,830.9 and overlaps the /RTY central compression band (2,847–2,867), the level a squeeze would have to reclaim.
