Eaton Sales Up 28%; GAAP EPS Rises Just 7%: Rapid Earnings Reaction

Listen to the news

Key Points

  • Orders hit record levels in all three segments, and Electrical backlog grew 46%.

  • Higher interest costs from recent acquisitions cut into the profit that reached shareholders.

  • Management raised its organic growth outlook but expects growth to slow in the fourth quarter.

Eaton (NYSE: ETN) reported third-quarter sales of $8.9 billion, up 28%, and shares rose about 1.8% in Tuesday trading. Organic sales grew 19%, orders and backlog hit records, and management raised its organic growth guidance. But GAAP earnings per share rose only 7%, to $2.77. Acquisition debt and amortization absorbed most of the extra operating profit.

Key Numbers

  • Organic sales growth: 19%.
  • Segment margin: 25.3%, up 30 basis points.
  • Adjusted EPS: $3.68, versus $3.07.
  • GAAP EPS: $2.77, versus $2.59.

What It Means

Debt is the main drag. Net interest expense nearly tripled, to $198 million, as borrowings roughly doubled alongside the Boyd Thermal and Ultra PCS purchases.

Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »

Amortization is the second drag. Acquired intangible assets are expensed over time, and that charge more than doubled. Adjusted EPS excludes both charges, so it grew far faster than GAAP. Full-year GAAP EPS guidance is roughly flat with 2025, while adjusted guidance implies double-digit growth.

Orders are the real signal. Twelve-month rolling orders hit record dollars in all three segments, and Electrical backlog grew 46%.

What to Watch Next

Watch whether fourth-quarter organic growth lands in the guided 13% to 15% range, down from 19% this quarter. Also track net interest expense, which sets how much operating profit reaches GAAP earnings.
