Listen to the news

Key Points

  • Commercial loans grew nearly 21% annualized excluding the HighPoint acquisition.

  • Fixed-rate assets totaling $737 million will reprice over six quarters.

  • Net interest margin expanded 11 basis points to 3.82%.

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 27, 2026, Independent Bank (NASDAQ:IBCP) announced net income of $17.9 million alongside robust organic loan and deposit growth. A long-term investor cares because sustained organic expansion paired with disciplined balance sheet management provides a durable engine for shareholder returns across changing economic cycles.

Three things management said stand out.

1. Commercial Banker Recruitment Drives Market Share Gains

Independent Bank expands its commercial presence by hiring experienced bankers from larger regional institutions. This localized talent strategy helps the bank capture market share without relying solely on costly acquisitions.

Year to date, we have added 11 experienced commercial bankers, bringing total to 55 bankers comprising 8 commercial loan teams across our statewide footprint.
-- Joel Rahn, Executive Vice President and Head of Commercial Banking

2. Asset Repricing Creates an Automatic Margin Tailwind

A substantial pool of fixed-rate loans and securities matures over the next six quarters. Replacing these assets at higher current market yields provides a predictable upward boost to net interest margin.

Over that period, approximately $737 million in loans and securities are scheduled to mature or reprice at a weighted average yield of 4.74%.
-- Gavin A. Mohr, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

3. Problem Assets Center on a Single Commercial Credit

Nonperforming loans crept higher, but the increase stems primarily from one large commercial development exposure currently in bankruptcy. Management has isolated the net risk and believes existing reserves adequately cushion against potential losses.

The net exposure on that is about $21 million and I do not think that we specifically disclosed the amount that we have reserved, but we feel like we are fully reserved for any potential loss exposure.
-- Joel Rahn, Executive Vice President and Head of Commercial Banking

Looking Ahead

System integration for the recent HCB Financial Corp acquisition remains the immediate operational focus. Core commercial lending momentum and ongoing technology investments position the institution well as conversion expenses wrap up.

As we move through the remainder of 2026, our focus will be continuing to invest in our team, investing in and leveraging our technology, and completing the successful integration and November 9 conversion of HighPoint Community Bank.
-- William Bradford Kessel, President and Chief Executive Officer

Asset repricing tailwinds and stable deposit costs support ongoing profitability across volatile interest rate cycles. The bank maintains disciplined capital allocation, prioritizing organic growth and steady dividend payments.

We have built a strong community bank franchise. Which positions us well to effectively manage through a variety of economic environments and continue delivering strong and consistent results for our shareholders.
-- William Bradford Kessel, President and Chief Executive Officer
