Pfizer (PFE) Q3 Results Contrast Profit Rebound With Margin Pressure

Simply Wall St·11/04/2026 23:42:24
Listen to the news

Pfizer stock closed at US$30.79 on Wednesday, up 2.6% on the day, as traders reacted quickly to a cleaner third quarter 2026 profit story. The jump in price captures the relief that earnings per share rebounded to roughly US$0.57 and quarterly net income reached about US$3.2b after recent losses.

The bigger story for long term holders sits in the income statement. Reported net margin over the past year is only 6.3%, well below the prior year’s level, which keeps pressure on a relatively rich 43.5x P/E, even as management talks up pipeline progress and cost savings.

Pfizer Bull Case Meets First Execution Checkpoints

Bulls argue Pfizer can shift earnings toward obesity, oncology and other late stage assets as older products fade.

"For that view to hold, Pfizer needs the obesity franchise around berobenatide and the ADC centric oncology portfolio to translate current trial and launch momentum into durable, non COVID revenue growth through and beyond the LOE period."

Q3 gives early proof points. Ex COVID revenue grew 7% operationally, while launched and acquired products climbed 32%, with oncology agents like Padcev and TUKYSA contributing. Management also raised full year revenue and EPS guidance and highlighted ongoing berobenatide Phase III enrollment. The growth pivot is starting to show up in reported numbers, not just slideware.

Pfizer Bear Case: Pipeline Setbacks Versus Early Wins

The harsher view on Pfizer is that late stage oncology assets may not fill the COVID and patent hole fast enough.

"Despite management’s push to expand in oncology through Seagen’s antibody drug conjugate platform and multiple Phase II and III programs such as mevrometostat, the recent negative Phase III outcome for sigvotatug vedotin in non squamous non small cell lung cancer and the associated impairment raise the risk that other late stage oncology assets might not deliver the volumes and pricing needed to support the non COVID revenue and earnings trajectory that many investors expect."

Q3 results give a mixed read across that worry. Launched and acquired therapies grew 32% operationally and oncology products like Padcev and TUKYSA helped that shift. At the same time, the US$4.3b impairment tied to sigvotatug vedotin and Oxbryta is a concrete miss on the oncology and rare disease plan, not just a theoretical concern. Recent positive data for Elrexfio, Talzenna plus Xtandi, and TUKYSA label expansion show parts of the cancer portfolio gaining traction. The quarter therefore confirms that impairment risk inside oncology is real, while also showing that not every program is breaking in the same direction.

Hunt For Mispriced Earnings Power
