Key Points

  • Intrepid Potash raised full-year 2026 Trio production guidance by 10,000 tons.

  • Management plans $20 million in 2027 potash mine development investments.

  • The USDA selected Intrepid's proposed SOP project for $139 million.

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Nov. 4, 2026, Intrepid Potash (NYSE:IPI) announced an increase in its full-year production guidance for Trio, a specialty fertilizer containing low-chloride potassium, magnesium, and sulfate. Operational improvements across mining facilities are driving unit production costs lower. And increased output paired with cost discipline supports expanding margins across agricultural cycles. Three takeaways from management's commentary stand out for long-term investors.

1. Trio Operational Efficiency Accelerates Production and Expansion Plans

Operating performance at the East mine resulted in a 19% year-over-year production gain for Trio during the third quarter. Management plans to invest $16 million in 2027 to add 30,000 tons of annual Trio capacity, with an expected internal rate of return of 30%, a metric that estimates project profitability.

This operating performance supports a 10,000 ton increase in our full year 2026 Trio production guidance and positions us to target annual production of more than 300,000 tons, a goal we didn't expect to achieve until sometime in 2027.

2. Targeted Mine Investments Sustain Potash Output and Capital Efficiency

Management is prioritizing high-return investments within its existing asset footprint to sustain output in muriate of potash, a potassium-rich crop nutrient. The company plans to allocate capital toward mine development projects that boost volume without increasing fixed overhead expenses.

For Potash, we plan to invest approximately $20 million in mine development in 2027 to sustain annual production at levels approximately 20,000 to 30,000 tons above prior years, with expected rates of return of approximately 30%.

3. Proposed Specialty Fertilizer Project Gains Federal Funding Support

The United States Department of Agriculture, or USDA, selected Intrepid's proposed Carlsbad facility for potential grant funding. The plant would produce 220,000 tons of sulfate of potash (SOP), a premium fertilizer, annually, expanding the company's specialty product portfolio.

Against this backdrop, as we announced on October 26, the USDA selected our proposed sulfate of potash, or SOP, project near Carlsbad, New Mexico, for approximately $139 million and proposed matching funding through its FIELDS program.

Looking Ahead

Order books for key product lines remain well subscribed, and stable market pricing provides clear revenue visibility through year-end. As the sole domestic producer of muriate of potash, the company benefits from regional transportation advantages that enable it to serve key growing regions. Management is monitoring Baltic shipping bottlenecks and global sulfur constraints while maintaining pricing discipline as spring application demand approaches.

As we move through the last quarter of 2026 potash pricing has remained stable, and our order books for both potash and Trio are well subscribed, giving us a high level of visibility heading into the end of the year.
-- Zachry Adams, Vice President of Sales and Marketing

A balance sheet with $152.3 million in cash and zero debt gives the company room for ongoing organic growth investments alongside opportunistic share repurchases. Management is aligning capital allocation directly with internal return thresholds to maximize per-share equity value over time.

We see an opportunity to generate significant returns on invested capital through organic growth investment, share repurchases, and operational execution.
-- Kevin Crutchfield, Chief Executive Officer
