The Zhitong Finance App learned that Fox (FOXA.US) announced on Friday that it has completed a $22 billion acquisition deal for the streaming platform Roku (ROKU.US). The acquisition combines Fox's live sports events, news, and local TV programs with Roku's smart TV platform to further expand Fox's business footprint in the streaming media market and create a TV and streaming giant covering more than 100 million households.
Fox said that by integrating the two parties' businesses, the new company will be able to reach more than 100 million households, combine traditional TV content with Internet TV distribution platforms, and provide richer services to viewers and advertising partners.
The deal also means Fox is further strengthening its presence in the connected TV (Connected TV) market. Roku has a mature smart TV operating system and streaming content distribution platform, while Fox has rich content resources in the fields of sporting events, news, and local TV shows. The business integration between the two is expected to enhance Fox's ability to collaborate in the traditional TV and streaming media markets.
Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch said in a statement: “Starting today, the priority of the merged company is to continue to fully serve our audience and partners while strengthening the core concepts of the Roku platform of openness and choice.”
According to management arrangements after the transaction is completed, Roku founder Anthony Wood will join Fox's board of directors and serve as co-chairman of the newly formed Fox Digital Platforms division (Fox Digital Platforms).
The new division will integrate several of Fox's digital businesses, including Roku, free ad-supported streaming platform Tubi, streaming service Fox One, and content production company Red Seat Ventures. Among them, Tubi mainly provides free, ad-supported streaming content, while Fox One is Fox's streaming service, while Red Seat Ventures focuses on producing podcasts and other digital content.
By unifying the above businesses into Fox's digital platform division, the company will further integrate content production, streaming media distribution and digital platform resources to promote the collaborative development of traditional TV businesses and emerging digital businesses.
The acquisition is also an important step for Fox to continue expanding its digital media business in recent years. In 2025, Fox launched the Fox One streaming service and acquired Red Seat Ventures to further expand its digital content and streaming business. Now, with the official addition of Roku, Fox's layout in the field of connected TV platforms and streaming content distribution has been further improved.
In the context of traditional pay-TV users continuing to shift to Internet streaming services, media companies with content resources and distribution platforms are seeking to enhance competitiveness through business integration.
For Fox, the acquisition of Roku not only expanded its coverage of home users, but also enabled the company to combine traditional superior content such as sports, news, and local programs with connected TV platforms to further expand the development space for digital advertising and streaming media businesses.
With the official completion of the $22 billion deal, Fox's future focus will shift to business integration with its digital platforms and how to use Roku's user reach capabilities to drive content distribution and commercialization growth.
