Spain Taps Airbus for New Combat Training System

05:42 AM EST, 12/30/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Airbus (AIR.PA, AIR.F) unit Airbus Defence and Space has secured the Spanish Ministry of Defence contract to lead a new combat pilot training programme for the Spanish Air and Space Force, replacing the current F-5 trainer aircraft. The French aerospace company will work with Turkish Aerospace to oversee the acquisition of 30 HÜRJET jet trainers, their adaptation with Spanish-developed systems, and upgrades to training facilities at Talavera la Real Air Base, according to a Tuesday release. Initial aircraft deliveries are planned for 2028 to 2029, with adapted versions to follow from 2031 through 2035. The contract includes the building of a new aircraft conversion center and training center in Spain, along with the provision of maintenance services.
