According to local media reports, France plans to ban children under 15 from accessing social media sites and ban the use of mobile phones in high schools from September 2026. French President Emmanuel Macron has often pointed out that social media is one of the main culprits of youth violence, and said he wants France to follow Australia's example. Australia banned young people under 16 from using social media platforms, including Facebook, Snapchat, and YouTube for the first time in the world in December, and the ban is already in effect. Macron is likely to announce these measures in his speech to the nation on New Year's Eve. The French government will submit draft legislation for legal review in early January. French primary and secondary schools have banned the use of mobile phones since 2018, and the new reform will extend this ban to high schools. In the French education system, students between the ages of 11 and 15 attend secondary school. France also passed a law in 2023 requiring social networking platforms to obtain parental consent when children under 15 create accounts, but technical challenges have hindered implementation of this law.
