On January 2, local time, the Southern Transitional Council of Yemen issued a political statement stating that the southern region has launched a series of security and governance measures aimed at promoting the political settlement of the southern issue and playing a positive role in regional stability. Chairman of the Southern Transition Committee, Adrius Zubaidi, announced on the same day that a two-year “transition phase” will be initiated, during which dialogue between North and South will be promoted, and after the transition period is over, a referendum on the future status of the South will be held to exercise the “right to self-determination.” The relevant referendum will seek to be carried out under the supervision of the United Nations.
