On January 5, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, who is visiting China, posted a post on his social media account discussing the relationship between South Korea and China and the future direction of cooperation. Lee Jae-myung posted a statement about attending the China-Korea Business Forum. In the post, he first reviewed the development and growth of personnel exchanges and economic and trade exchanges since the two countries established diplomatic relations more than 30 years ago. He wrote, “In the ever-changing internal and external environment, the two countries have always upheld the principles of mutual trust, mutual benefit and win-win situation, and continue to promote cooperation. This is the most valuable asset of the Korea-China relationship. The resilience of this cooperation has also been verified many times in history.” Referring to the current relationship between the two countries, Lee Jae-myung wrote, “On November 1 of last year, I reached an agreement with President Xi Jinping in Gyeongju and decided to fully resume the relationship between South Korea and China and embark again on a pragmatic and win-win development path as a strategic partner. Both sides also highly agree that the key is to create results that the two peoples of the two countries can actually feel. To turn this consensus into tangible results, the most important thing is the exchange and cooperation at the private sector level.” Li Zaiming also proposed two directions of cooperation: one is innovative cooperation in the manufacturing sector, and the other is more active cultural exchange. He said that the South Korean government will maintain close cooperation with the Chinese government, continue to improve the system and environment, and support enterprises of the two countries to expand cooperation channels. In another post updating his encounter with Korean expatriates in China, Lee Jae-myung recalled his experience of visiting Beijing many years ago: “Looking back on the past when I was the mayor of Seongnam City, the years have passed, and now I am here again as the President of the Republic of Korea to meet the vast majority of overseas Chinese in China, and I am deeply moved.” He wrote, “We have been through a difficult period where there was a diplomatic vacuum. We have worked tirelessly and continuously to normalize diplomatic relations, and have achieved many significant results in this process. Among them, the full restoration of relations between South Korea and China, which had previously stagnated, is particularly worthy of recognition and is one of the most important results.”
